The Hughes
family has lived on Flat Top Mountain since the late 1800's. The
family farm has many homesteads dating back to the original Hughes settlers.
Hezekiah Hughes, the founder of the Hughes farm, laid claim to 15,000 acres,
and is buried on his original homestead. His headstone can still be
seen today.
The present
day Hughes, Terry and Diane Hughes, now own a small part of the original
farm. Terry Hughes owns just over 1000 acres which he has been farming
for many, many years. He and Diane had 1 son, Adam, and 2 girls, Tera
and Kerry.
Adam Hughes
is currently serving his country at Fort Campbell, KY. He is the
oldest of the three kids and has 2 kids of his own, Christopher and Gracie.
Tera and Kerry still live on the family farm. Even from a very young
age, the girls were "horse-crazy". Though Terry tried to get them
interested in cattle, they had minds of their own. Kerry, the
youngest, began riding at the age of 7. She was barrel racing by the
age of 14, and by the age of 17, she had acquired no less than 6 horses.
Tera, also
actively involved in the equine world, went on to get an agricultural degree
from Tennessee Tech where she joined the equestrian team. She competed
is both barrel racing and western pleasure.
Kerry
continued to pursue her love of barrel racing and went on to join NBHA
(National Barrel Horse Association) and road the circuit for several years.
She and her husband Chase Dodd both road the circuit actively competing
until the birth of their daughter, Lily in 2005, and their son, Lane in
2006. Kerry, not to be deterred from her love of horses, now manages
Triple H.
